Since Stanley’s passing, Allan Miles, has been hoping to track down his brother’s former lover, Gwen.
Armed with a signed photograph of Gwen in her 1960s nursing uniform and only minor details of her life, Allan enlisted the Macleay Argus to help find the mystery woman and he has been overwhelmed by the reaction to the ensuing story.
“We’ve had 17 responses from as far away as Warwick in Qld, Tweed Heads, Newcastle and even Nowra on the South Coast,” he said.
“There was six from the Kempsey Macleay region.”
A call from Bellingen eventually put Allan in touch with a woman on the Lower Macleay identifying as Gwen.
“I spoke to Gwen and she still lives in the Macleay Valley,” Allan said.
“I will meet her on Saturday.”
Allan said it was an astonishing example of the media and social media combining to produce a positive outcome.
“It’s an amazing result,” he said.
“I more or less hoped this person still remembered Stan and lived local. I’m overawed.
“Thanks to the Argus for running the story.”
Stanley’s “Celebration of Life” service is to be held on Sunday, May 27, at the Uniting Church on the corner of Wide and Tozer St at 9.30am.
