Each year, a picture book is selected for a simultaneous reading event in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family homes, childcare centres, bookshops, children’s hospitals and communities across Australia.
This year for the first time, children in New Zealand joined in and two nations read simultaneously with organiser, the Australian Library and Information Association, aiming to have 900,000 kids involved.
Last year, The Cow Tripped over the Moon, was read by author Tony Wilson and streamed live over Facebook, as over 680,000 readers in more than 6000 locations read along. In 2018, Tony will read the sequel, Hickory Dickory Dash, written by Tony and illustrated by Laura Wood.
At Kempsey Shire Library, the children gathered around Mr Milburn as he delivered an engaging rendition of the story.
“It’s a really good book,” he said.
“My grandchildren would love it.”
Mr Milburn said children learning to read, write, illustrate and be creative as early as possible is vital to their future prospects in life.
“It’s really important and the library has a critical role in helping them to learn, and that part of the service is great,” he said.
“Not many people are aware of the breadth of services the library actually offers.”
