In conjunction with the state-wide Saving Lives on Country Roads campaign and NSW Police enforcement during the June long weekend from June 8 to 11.
Council will be actively promoting road safety throughout the shire via digital message boards, print and social media advertising and hosting two road safety events. Council’s Projects Officer – Community Safety, Marilyn Breen, said Council has a role to play in keeping residents safe not only by improving infrastructure but by raising awareness of the risks when driving.
“In line with the Saving Lives on Country Roads campaign, Council is aiming to make residents more aware that they are the ones being affected by crash incidents and have the power to make safer decisions about the risks of driving on country roads,” Ms Breen said.
“Following the NSW Police enforcement campaign, Council will be running advertising with a focus on promoting safe driver behaviour and highlighting local crash data to help raise awareness.
“South West Rocks has the second highest population and as a result, a high proportion of crashes occur in this region of the shire. From 18 June to 2 July, residents will notice digital message boards located along Plummers Lane with speed safety messages.”
Council will have a road safety information stall at the South West Rocks Oval on Saturday, June23, when soccer and rugby league games are being played. A free child car safety seat checking day will also be held for parents at the Macleay Pensioners Hall on the corner of Clyde and Stuart Streets, Kempsey on Friday 29 June from 10am to 1pm. The event will be run by council with support from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). Bookings for this event are essential and can be done by calling 6566 3282.
