In a Tasmanian first, triple j’s One Night Stand will be held at St Helens in September.

Each year triple j’s One Night Stand takes some of the country’s best acts to a different regional town for a free party.

Tasmanians will be treated to the sounds of Vance Joy, Peking Duk, Tkay Maidza, Middle Kids and Alex the Astronaut.

St Helens resident Kristi Chapple nominated her hometown to host One Night Stand.

“St Helens doesn’t get anything like this and doesn’t have a lot of opportunities for live music,” she said.

Passionate about young people and improving their mental health, Ms Chapple said an event like this helps engage youth with the little coastal town.

“This sort of thing creates opportunities to keep the kids here and the benefits of exposure to St Helens and the whole of Break O’Day with the flow onto businesses beforehand and onward, and to put the area on the map,” she said.

St Helens Mayor Mick Tucker said the announcement was huge for the community.

“Not only will this event excite, inspire and engage our youth who can feel isolated by our location and lack of opportunity, it will also really put St Helens and the Break O’Day area on the map nationally,” he said.

About 7000 people of all ages are expected to attend the event.

One Night Stand has taken live music to regional towns for the past 15 years. Last year’s event was held at Mount Isa in Queensland
