Kempsey Shire Council is reviewing and updating the Estuary Coastal Zone Management Plans for the Macleay River, Killick Creek and Korogoro Creek.

Coastal Management Programs will replace the existing plans and will be a guide for council to preserve and improve the habitats, recreational amenity and resilience of these estuaries into the future.

Council, with financial and technical support from the Office of Environment and Heritage, has engaged Coastal Management Consultants BMT to undertake stage one scoping studies of these estuaries.

The studies, which are currently being undertaken and should be completed by late 2018, require evaluating current management measures to consider either new or alternate measures for improvement.

Council’s Senior Natural Resources Officer, Ron Kemsley, said as a component of the scoping studies, council wants the community to provide input by filling in three online surveys to help council understand the community’s needs and management priorities for these waterways.

“How we use and manage these waterways is important and will have a big impact on the shire’s future generations,” Mr Kemsley said.

“Public feedback will help council develop new coastal management programs while ensuring that the programs are prepared in line with public expectations.”
