The introduced vine weeds Madiera Vine and Cats Claw Creeper are having a devastating impact on vegetation growing along the Macleay River. The Macleay Landcare Network is so concerned about these weeds they are hosting a community workshop at Wharf Rd East Kempsey this Saturday June 16, starting at 9am.

The Landcare Group in partnership with the NSW Environmental Trust has been actively supporting efforts to control these weeds that florish along the riverbanks.
“By supporting the work of contractors in the upper catchment, and getting hands on during working bees at the East Kempsey site, the Landcare group is showing its commitment to tackling this problem,” Landcare Officer Andy Vinter said.
“We also hope to bring a new tool to reduce the spread of these weeds in the valley.”
The production of the Madeira Beetle and the Jewel Beetle as biological control agents by the NSW Department of Primary Industry may help to control these weeds along the north coast.
“I would like to see landholders to come forward to help us breed and release these agents in the 2018 to 2019 growing season. Although these beetles will not provide a quick fix, they will help in the long run in the battle to control these weeds,” Mr Vinter said.
Information about these biological control agents will be available at the workshop.
The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate how to control these vine weeds to stop their spread in the valley.
“Many people will have rainforest trees or regrowth on their property,” Macleay Landcare Committee member David Adams said.
“We want people to come to the workshop to learn about rainforest and how to look after it.”
Weed control experts Kosta Delimihalis and John Delaney will be on hand to demonstrate how to control these vine weeds and get the most from your weed control efforts.
“This will provide an excellent opportunity to learn from the experts,” Mr Adams said.
