The updated pole will feature bright colours so the heights of previous major floods are clearly identifiable as well as including historical newspaper articles that describe the impacts that these floods had on the Macleay Valley at the time.
“It’s an iconic way to represent the floods in the town,” INDO said.
Kempsey Shire Council Community Projects Officer Olivia Parker said the existing flood marker pole has gone reasonably unnoticed by locals.
“People haven’t realised what it is here for and what it represents,” Ms Parker said.
The hope is for this makeover to draw the attention to what the pole represents in an interesting and artistic way.
The renewal is a joint project between Kempsey Shire Council and the Mid North Coast region of the NSW SES.
There will be an unveiling ceremony of the completed flood marker on July 17.
Pedestrian access around Clyde St Mall will be restricted from today through until Thursday while the renewal is in progress.
Access to the car park, shops and toilet block won’t be affected.
