Traineeships include formal training and hands-on learning in an area of interest at Council as well as valuable work experience.
School-based traineeships mean that students can start their traineeship over Years 11 and 12, complete a minimum of 100 days accredited training and eight hours per week of paid on the job employment and be able to receive their HSC.
Once completed, participants will receive not only a nationally recognised qualification and a stepping stone into the workforce with the opportunity to apply for roles within Council or other organisations.
Five young men who graduated from Kempsey High School in 2015 and 2017, are currently enrolled in traineeships with Council and HVTC.
Tom Rooimans and Jacob Heuston are currently undertaking a Water Operations Trainee Certificate III; Jake Davidson and Kai Darby a Water Operations Trainee
Certificate II and; Cooper Wilson is undertaking a Civil Construction Trainee Certificate II.
Tom started a two-year school-based traineeship in year 11 after some encouragement from his career advisor Mark Rix.
He said embarking on the traineeship has been the best decision he’s made.
“I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been a good experience and I’ve learnt a lot along the way,” he said.
“I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do so it was a good opportunity for me to finish my HSC and get into the workforce.
“I’m hoping to get a full-time job with Council when I finish my traineeship so I can stay in the area.”
Since 2011, the partnership between HVTC and Council has resulted in 40 young people taking on a traineeship with Council across both the civil construction and water departments.
