Kempsey marketing and seniors Librarian, Mary Williams, said the event was a huge success with 12 performers taking part in the heat with some travelling from Coffs Harbour to contest the round.
Entrants performed in front of a live audience of over 50 people where they had two minutes to impress the judges with their original spoken word, poetry, hip hop, monologues and stories.
Rhys Waite of Kempsey impressed the judges and won the heat, receiving a $100 cash prize. The runner-up was Rob Cummins while the People’s Choice Award went to Nicky Heavey. Each winner was given an assortment of local produce.
Rhys and Rob have made it through to the NSW finals which will be held in Sydney in mid-October.
Last year’s Australian Poetry Slam adult champion, Jesse Oliver, hosted the event and ran a workshop for students from Kempsey High School prior to the heat.
