The documents date back to April through to July of 1900 when the Irish Catholic families living in the Macleay Valley were documented by a reporter named Killeevy.
The book ‘Meandering on the Macleay with Killeevy’ was edited by Kempsey Family History Group president Bruce Cain.
Bruce said the book will allow locals to find out more about their family history and will also interest locals who want to know more about the history of the town.
“For people whose families have been in the area since 1900, it gives a documented account of what it was like for them and who lived here at the time,” Mr Cain said.
The documents that make up the book are comprised of articles written by Killeevy for a special publication in the Freemans Journal in Sydney.
“He spent three months here talking to local Irish Catholic farmers in 1900 and he marketed the articles towards other Irish Catholics in Sydney so they could have an idea of the situation in country towns and on the farms,” Mr Cain said.
“It’s interesting for locals to see what it was like during this time for farmers in the Macleay area.”
The book is now available for $10 at West Kempsey Newsagency, West Kempsey Post Office and Kempsey Family Research Centre.
