Minister for Corrections David Elliott said the Mark Simmons Range, near Windsor, would be the primary facility for all Corrective Services training in metropolitan Sydney.
“The NSW Government’s prison infrastructure program has created thousands of new jobs through the construction of new prisons and the expansion of existing centres,” Mr Elliott said.
“We pride ourselves on providing the best facilities to match the training delivered to staff and recruits, and this new range is set to be a leader in its field.”
The range was named in honour of the late Mark Simmons ACM, a respected leader of the Extreme High Security Unit. Mr Simmons dedicated 26 years to Corrective Services NSW until he passed away in June this year.
CSNSW Commissioner Peter Severin said transport, escort and watchtower officers very rarely use their firearms, but it is vital they receive the best training to ensure community safety.
“The Security Operations Group trainers share their experience and expertise with new recruits - and it’s that training that will make our recruits more than competent and capable in the field,” Commissioner Severin said.
In the past three years, there have been nine reports of shots fired at NSW correctional centres. No one was injured.
The previous range at Windsor was in operation for 25 years and underwent extensive refurbishment, including on the 30-student classroom, to keep up with the training needs of recruits and staff.
