Being an advocate for local businesses and having served on the Board of the Macleay Valley Business Chamber for a number of years, has given me an insight to commonly identified problem areas.
Two of the big issues are: how to find good staff; and what assistance and funding streams are available?
If you have a small business or are thinking of starting your own business, council is celebrating ‘NSW Small Business Month’ by hosting two workshops: ‘How to find the right staff’; and ‘Grant and Tendering Workshop’. These workshops give you the opportunity to learn, ask questions and network with other local businesses.
Every business requires quality employees they can trust and rely on. People who share your dream and are keen to help with all the big and small tasks that provide a great customer experience.
As an employer you need to define what it is you need – should staff come skilled, or can you upskill them? Remember, some workers come with skills outside your business area, but these skills can complement your business.
Small businesses must be versatile due to not having the resources available to larger companies. If you learn how to scope for staff and retain them - that is one less thing you need to worry about.
If funding is available, how does a business owner know where to find out about it? Too many business owners don’t fill out forms because they can look complicated, or they simply don’t have time to set aside. To help grow your business, I hope you can take ‘time out’ of your busy schedules to attend either or both workshops.
