The Melbourne cup got underway today, and the Gladstone Hotel, Smithtown Riverview Hotel and South West Rocks Seabreeze were all filled with keen race fans ready to enjoy the “race that stops the nation.”
Despite the humid conditions here, Melbourne experienced a serious downpour that saw the Melbourne Cup get off to a rocky start. There were some delays and fears for the safety of jockeys and horses.
The weather eventually dried out enough for the big race at 3pm where Yucatan was the initial favourite to win.
However, it was Cross Counter who defied the odds to get the victory in a fantastic display of speed and endurance.
