Council continues to work actively with the police and other agencies to raise community awareness and act to address crime in our community.
Last week over 50 people attended the Police and Community Consultative Committee meeting held at Council.
At the meeting Mid-North Coast Police launched the ‘Not our Way – Deadly enough without Drugs’ harm minimisation campaign which was well received by the attendees at the meeting.
Council’s community safety initiatives continue to be implemented with State and Federal Government grants assisting with installation of additional lighting and CCTV cameras. To assist Police and attract the relevant resources it is important to make sure all incidences of crime are reported. Handy references for reporting crime include:
Police Assistance Line (PAL) : 131 444. For the reporting of crimes that are not in progress or have no known offender (eg. malicious damage, break and enter or stealing)
Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000. A community-based policing service that gathers details of criminal activity volunteered by members of the public
Emergency services: 000. For all emergency services assistance from the police, ambulance or fire brigade.
Practical steps we can all take to minimise theft include never leaving valuables in plain sight in your car or unattended at the beach; locking your home or vehicle; getting to know your neighbour and reporting suspicious behavior.

Council will support the Not Our Way program and continue to work with Police to develop other options that bring the community together to take joint ownership for creating a safe place to live and work.
I am taking a holiday over the next few weeks and Deputy Mayor, Ashley Williams, will bring you the weekly column while I am on leave.
