The Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat club have got off to a near-perfect start in the opening two rounds of the North Coast Surf Boat Series held at Woolgoolga as they pursue a sixth-straight overall championship title.

The Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat crews combined to earn 164 points and a 43-point lead over second placed Woolgoolga.
The Masters 160s and Under-19s junior crew were the best performers from Kempsey-Crescent Head as they finished in first place in both of the opening rounds.
The Masters 200s and the Whale Cup also earned a win in round one while the Open Men, Open women and Reserves crews earned a second and a third.
Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat captain Scott Edwards was pleased to get the season underway in terrific fashion.
“It was a good couple of days and great to get the first carnival under our belts,” Edwards told the Argus.
“We picked up some great results and we will continue to build on that throughout the rest of the season.”
Edwards believes there’s a lot of talented crews competing in each division is expecting tight tight racing throughout the season.
“The battle in A-grade should be interesting, there’s only four crews but it’s all really close and anyone could win on their day,” Edwards said.
“It’s a similar story with most of the divisions, it’s going to be a close season.”
Edwards was proud of the club’s competitors who helped fill in for other crews and back up throughout the weekend.
“We had a few people out with injuries and being unavailable,” Edwards said.
“But other people stepped up to replace them and help out and it was great to see.”
Edwards said the conditions tested the crews.
“The wind picked up in the afternoon on the first day, which made it tough for the last couple of races,” Edwards said.
“On Sunday it was very flat and we didn’t get any help from waves when heading back into shore which made it tough going.”
Kempsey-Crescent Head had an official launch of their new boat on Sunday November 4 and they honoured the late Rex Williamson, who their new boat is named after.
“It was a nice day, Rex’s son Darren was the sweep of the boat for its first launch and Rex’s wife Jeane was there too,” Edwards said.
Rex was a member of the Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat crew and swept for many crews in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
