It all started from a Facebook post and has since evolved into the “Macleay Toy Run”, which will see 300 presents delivered to the towns of Bingara and Barraba on December 1.
“I’m quite happy that the kids of families who have been devastated by the drought will be able to have something this Christmas.” Ms Zwiep said.
“This is specifically for the kids affected by drought, I”m a child care worker and kids mean a lot to me.”
Ms Zwiep has already amassed a variety of age-appropriate gifts, including gift cards, clothes, toys and many more presents all provided from donations in the community.
“The response from the community has been amazing, I can't thank them enough for what they've done.”
“Considering how much flak Kempsey cops, its really awesome how everyone has come together to help.”
“My friend Melissa Chapman has been invaluable too, she has been like my assistant, doing pick ups, drop offs and present wrapping.”
A complete list of all the businesses who donated and helped out is available on the Macleay Toy Run Facebook page, they include:
- Kempsey Big W
- Kempsey IGA
- Eagle Insurance Brokers
- Ray White
- Little Adventures
- CWA
- Kempsey Scouts
- Green Hill Public School
- DMB Kitchens
- Beaux Laidy
- All Cleaning Services
- Dance Cantwell
At the moment Ms Zwiep is focused on this December, however she has considered the future.
“I wouldn't mind turning the Macleay Toy Run into an annual thing, if I can, I hope to aim for the next five years at least.”
“Each year we would do a different town or area. Even if they get rain today, a lot of these towns will spend years recovering.”
Anyone who would like to donate something for those less fortunate this Christmas can contact Melissa on 0427 433 668, or message the Facebook page “Macleay Toy Run”.
