Real Futures regional manager Jaime Parker and Employment Specialist Kellie Fitzroy provided a free BBQ lunch and drinks for everyone to commemorate the day.
“It has been a great turnout,” Ms Parker said.
“It was only a very last minute thing, but we wanted to do something to celebrate the day and give back to the community. Giving back is very important to us,” she added.
The United Nations sanctioned day is celebrated internationally and is designed to increase the public's awareness, understanding and acceptance of people who live with a disability. It also showcases their achievements and contributions.
International Day of People with Disability is held every year on December 3 and Ms Parker hopes to have another event next year.
“Its a day to celebrate all people, I would like to see it as an annual event for us, and make it bigger each year,” Ms Parker said.
“People with a disability don’t often get a chance to socialise like this, whether it be due to transport issues, or they might not have a big social circle, this day helps give them a place to come and hang out.”
Along with celebrating IDPwD, Real Futures also does work in the community providing disability employment services, vocational training and employment centres and cultural competence services.
“We are trying to promote awareness and also giving back to the community; we want people to know what we can do for them,” Ms Parker said.
“Due to a recent change, our services are now for everyone, as long as they meet the requirements we can help everyone.”
“We want to be out in the community helping people; we like to think outside the box.
“If people aren't sure if they qualify for our services, they are welcome to contact us; our doors are always open, we are friendly and approachable here.”
