The United Nations sanctioned day is celebrated internationally and is designed to increase the public's awareness, understanding and acceptance of people who live with a disability. It also showcases their achievements and contributions.

Macleay Options Incorporated sales marketing manager Fiona Welsh spoke to the Argus about how her organisation is marking the day.   

“Today is a celebration day; we are stopping and showcasing everything from our services to some great items that have been made by people with a disability,” Ms Welsh said. 

“A lot of the stuff being made here is selling online, its all high quality and of an international standard. We are getting a lot of interest; it's mind-blowing.”

The day appeared to be a fun outing for everyone, and Ms Welsh was happy with the turnout. 

“There has been a constant flow of people through today; it's been great,” she said. 

Even the member for Oxley Melinda Pavey was expected at some point during the day to help commemorate the occasion. 

“Melinda Pavey supports us, she is our patron, she will probably stop by later this afternoon,” Ms Welsh said. 

“Days like this are great because they show a visual representation of their achievements, it really shows everyone what people with a disability are capable of,” she added.

Macleay Options Incorporated has seen rapid growth in the last few years and a significant change in the services they can offer.

“The organisation has grown exponentially in the last five years, and with it, there has been a big change, we can now help people with any kind of disability.” 

International Day of People with Disability is held every year on December 3 and Ms Welsh is adamant that another event will be on next year. 

“Everyone who works here gets so much joy and fulfilment from helping people,” she said.

“We had an event last year, and we will have one next year, we do it every year.” 

“Its a social day for people who often don’t get a chance to socialise all that much, for whatever reason.”
