Given a rather perfect weekend it’s not surprising that the most recent Seabreeze Beach Hotel Fishing Club’s competition held over the weekend of December 1 and 2 was a well-attended and keenly contested event. There were 86 nominations for the competition, and a total of 95.3kg weighed-in.

The spring/summer transition is usually an “iffy” time for fishing but, never the less, there was quite a variety of fish weighed-in including several Snapper in the 3 to 5kg range and the first Spotted Mackerel for the season.
In the beach, rock and estuary (inside) section of the competition all nominated species were accounted for and the prizes evenly spread around among the competitors.
Bream – senior – Bob Wright, 610gm; lady – Ethel Rowsell, 450gm.
Dusky Flathead – senior – Bob Shakespeare, 950gm; lady – Colleen Shakespeare, 705gm;
junior boy – Riley Gordon, 285gm.
Whiting – senior – Damien Ashley, 385gm; lady – Wendy Halverson, 365gm; Junior Boy –
Darcy Gordon, 175gm; junior girl – Lucy Mansfield, 300gm.
Native Bass – Rob Gordon, 920gm.
Senior Angler of the Month was Pat Halverson with six species and Junior Angler of the
Month was Lucy Mansfield with one specie (on a countback).
Given the ideal conditions most of the regular outside anglers participated in this month’s event. Although the outside species made up the bulk of the overall weigh-in total there were a limited number of species, therefore, competition was keen. As mentioned earlierthe Snapper went to 5kg and biggest, in fact, was a 5.085kg specimen caught by junior boy angler Riley Gordon. Some of the senior “Snapper Kings” were relieved by Riley’s junior status when he opened his esky. Riley’s fish also earned him Junior Outside Angler of the Month.
Greg Allen’s name came up a few times in the results. One of our regular competitors, Greg claimed biggest Teraglin with a 1.675kg fish, biggest Spotted Mackerel at 3.120kg and Senior Outside Angler of the Month with six species. Other winners were Dave Riddel with 2.215kg Pearl Perch and Grant Rowe with a 3.945kg Snapper.
The next monthly competition will be on the weekend of January 5 and 6, 2018.
Our annual Huge Fishing Competition will be held on the weekend of January 19 and 20 but more about that next report.
The bulk of the Club’s funding comes from meat raffles held at the Seabreeze Beach Hotel, South West Rocks on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 7pm and Saturdays from noon to 1pm. Part of the Club’s philosophy is that “we get from the town and we give to the town”. In line with this philosophy, the Club, at our recent weigh-in and presentation day, presented
Marine Rescue Trial Bay with a donation of $500. Unit Commander, Phil Hartley, was on hand to receive the donation. Volunteer marine rescue, up and down the coast, do a fantastic job monitoring the local and passing vessels. Phil’s message was simple, “when you put to sea, log on with Marine Rescue and when you return, log off!”
