Some time back when he first teamed up with the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club, one Steve Cameron suggested he was out to prove whether he was to be a game player or otherwise.

Now this regular visitor up from Lake Cathie for a Tuesday round of competition has gradually "come good" (so to speak), but it was just seven days ago that Steve really made his mark.
Yes, there were was many a fine shot in the 14 holes he traversed in what was an ordinary single stableford that was decided, as usual, on a points basis. The previous week Steve had somewhat failed to fire in a more serious Gold Medal Stroke event.
No surprise that Steve's 37 points score was best of the day and even with a cruel handicap deduction a similar performance today could reward him with a nice ham for Christmas. Worth more than $20, eh!
Good to see Terry Hyland, our Club's EOIG (Executive Officer In General), return to the winner's listings and this once an A-grader but lingering as a lesserlight for some time, was high and mighty (so to speak).
One of his playing partners who revealed Terry's 35 points, did say it all: "He did play really well and it was really good to see him come good." See, mate, you do have someone who cares and he's not from upriver Moparrabah either.
A more or less ordinary, but still damn good 32 points by Grassy Heads' Allan Heather, earned this fruit farmer another A-grade victory.
And you had to be good to figure in the day's ball competition as even B-grader John Terlich's 34 points did miss the boat (so to speak). Hard to win here at Kempsey, but isn't a new Srixon something, eh?
There were 10 others unlucky, too: Phil Pinney, Bill Paterson, Peter Mercer (33); Wayne Cooper,
Grahem Irving, Bruce Morris (32); Alan Macdonald, Graeme Dyet, Ron Ingall, Peter Campling (31).
Nearest the pins were somewhat scanty, just Heather (A) and Campling (B) featuring at the third hole, whilst A-grader Steve Bates saved face (so to speak) the only player onto the eighth green in one.
Campling's shot to inside the metre circle of the hole brought him a six-pack of new Srixons.
What...not Tooheys Pete!
Chip-ins were performed by Robert Johnston, Stuart Aston, Macdonald, Bates, Campling and Cameron.
Big day today for us veteran golfers with the 14-hole stableford event followed by the Annual General Meeting and then the Christmas Luncheon for all members past and present to enjoy.
Oh, yes, the presentation of the year's major awards will also take place and there will be a surprise or two that will bring almighty applause. Hope Santa Claus arrives!
Of course fellows there will be no official events on Christmas Day nor New Year's Day and the boss has set Tuesday, January 8, as the opener to the 2019 program.
On behalf of all here at the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club I wish one and all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May God Bless!
