The Masters 180s secured their second gold medal in as many carnivals when they bested the field in the final.

The crew had one change as Stu Henderson was in Japan and Steve Pellen stepped in to join Simon Tamblyn, Mick Conomos, Austin Northey and sweep Gavin Burkes.

The crew had positive results on their way to the final and were sitting in first place when disaster almost struck.

"They were almost taken out by the team in second place. They were on a wave on the way back in when an opposition boat lost control and almost took them out, they went right across the wave and it was lucky they avoided each other," Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat captain Scott Edwards told the Argus.

"It was a really good row and they recovered to finish strong.

"The crew were all very happy and I told them they have set the standard and they better back it up with another win at Aussies."

Edwards credited the side for always putting in their best performance when it matters most.

"They are a very competitive crew and they expect the most from themselves and each other," Edwards said.

"They put in the hard work when they are training and the results speak for themselves."

The club's Masters 220s also had a successful carnival as they picked up the bronze medal.

Dave Bartlett, Warren Howe, Joe Notley and Gavin Burke combined to finish strongly in the final.

Meanwhile the juniors and women's crews reached the quarterfinal and semi-final, respectively.

"The juniors only just missed out on going through to the semi-finals," Edwards said.

"They did a great job and will continue to get better.

"There was a clear winner in the girl's semi-final but the rest of the crews all caught the same wave in and it was just the luck of the surf that saw them miss out on a final."

Edwards said the club is very proud of all of the crews efforts and believes they do a great job at competing against the much larger clubs.

"We are very happy with our results," Edwards said.

"For such a small club, we were able to leave with two medals and two more great results. It's pretty impressive."

The crews have a week off before they travel to Coffs Harbour for the final round of the North Coast Surf Boat Series, where double points are on offer, before the Aussie titles are held the following weekend.

The two Masters crews will make the trip north for the national carnival on the Gold Coast.
