There were many highlights in last week's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club stroke event, but the maiden wins by Brian Stringer and Wayne Cooper, in fairness, were the stand-outs.

Making his return to the game itself since "coming good" after a serious (more than) sickness, Stringer signed on prior to nominating, whilst Cooper "cracked it" after being introduced to the sport last year.
Brian produced a 6-under 50 nett from a round of 68 to be the B-grade winner first up and it was certainly the best of the all-up 42-strong field.
For Wayne, his 54 nett was best of the C-grade so-called lesserlights and what a confidence-booster it will be for him.
Whilst the attention was rife for both minor grade winners - in fairness once again - the performance by Paul McNamara to take out A-grade with a 4-under 52 nett is also worthy of headline standing.
Macca was in a state of exalted delight (i.e. ecstasy) long after - and beforehand, too - following his sudden success that will attract the handicapper's attention.
And that will not be of any concern to, most probably, the most ardent of our Club's members.
Nearest the pin at the third hole were Graheme Martin (A) and Barry Pearson (C), while Dwayne Button (A) was solo at the eighth hole. Two chip-ins of note were recorded by Graeme Dyet.
Last week's round was the second of the 2019 Club Championships and reigning title-holder, Ian Rudd, holds a 5-stroke lead going into today's final 14-hole competition.
Rudd, with his 60-57 scores, has Hilary Dew (61-61) and Graheme Martin (60-62) his closest challengers.
In B-grade Ron Ingall (70-72) holds a commanding 9-shot lead over Mark Townsend (79-72) and Bob Garner (73-78), whilst in C-grade Barry Pearson (78-76) is four clear of Dennis O'Brien (77-81) and Steve Cameron (81-77).
Today's third and final round of championship stroke play has the back nine dominating and the change of scenery (so to speak) could well bring about the downslide of many.
Of course any visitors seeking a game will be made most welcome and good advice is to give our starter, Brody (Clarke), a call on 65626291 early on.
Tee-off is 9.30am.
The Kempsey Golf Club encourages everyone to attend for the competition on Tuesday mornings.
