The new headquarters will feature three truck bays, an office, training area and storage space as well as toilet and shower facilities.
The Dondingalong RFS crew is one of the busiest within the Kempsey Local Government Area and the new station will better equip them in their roles.
Dondingalong Brigade Captain Steve Sproule said members are looking forward to having a facility that will cater to their needs.
"It will be a lot better having our own building that's bigger and we'll be able to hold all of our training sessions, meetings and house our equipment in one place," he said.
"The members are really excited about it."
The Dondingalong brigade currently has around 60 members, of which 18 are firefighters.
"We do a lot of hazzard reduction burns and respond to call outs to road accidents as well as fighting fires."
The brigade currently uses the nearby community hall for training, meetings and toilet amenities.
"We'll be able to give back the community hall to locals to use for events when the new station is built," Mr Sproule said.
NSW RFS Lower North Coast Superintendent Lachlann Ison said the Dondingalong station is in need of updating to better accommodate the roll out of new RFS vehicles.
"The existing station was orginally built to house the brigades category 2 appliance, then a second bay added for the smaller category 9 appliance. The brigade currently has three appliances and therefore deemed appropriate to have a facility capable of housing all three trucks, as operational needs dictate," he said.
"The brigade's larger firefighter appliance is 20 years old and is due for replacement and the new larger category 1 appliance won't fit in the current station.
"The new facility will accommodate the vehicles as well as providing more space and facilities for the brigade."
RFS is partnering with Kempsey Shire Council to deliver the station, with council awarding a tender to Osborne and Dowling Pty Ltd to construct the new facility at Kalateenee Recreational Reserve.
"We're hoping the new facility will also attract more members to joining the brigade," Mr Sproule said.
Construction is expected to begin this week at the southern end of the reserve with the opening of the new station set for September.
