Eyes wide open and a smile a mile wide really singled out Rod Maher as having done something out of the ordinary following last week's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club regular on-a-Tuesday competition.

For this C-grade lesserlight had his name up on the Clubhouse whiteboard showing he had posted a total of 37 points in the 14-hole event that had attracted a rather disappointing small field of 29 starters.
It is known that Rod had plenty of good tutoring early in his golfing career before he virtually gave the game away and only recently -a year or two - made a comeback. It has been a gradual return to top form.
Listeners to local Tank Radio will probably (most) hear what Rod has to say about his top performance and 'twill be good news for sure and certain.
Respective B and A-grade winners - Bob Mavin and Cec Rudd - also welcomed a return to form to lead the way with their 33 and 32-point rounds, but unlike Maher they had to survive strong challenges.
Mavin had no answer to his lift in form and went cold when asked if the fact of a different partner alongside in his cart was right reasoning. Today's 2BBB outcome will dispel any doubt!
Back to his best - well, almost one supposes- was Rudd and 32 points from a single figure marker is a true indication of a good golfer.
Heavy rain early afternoon certainly put a dampener on things, but there were no deserters to prove the verve of the elderly. Fellows, like the putter, always have that brollie in your bag, eh!
With 32 points to their name(s) both Grahem Irving and Dennis O'Brien led the list of new Bridgestone recipients and one point to the good of Kevin Hopping, Max Gleeson and John Terlich.
Both Stuart Aston and Doug Magennis figured on 30, the latter featuring as the nearest the pin winner at both the third and 11th holes. Think Doug won another ball in the raffle!
And Alan Macdonald showed he was back with a well-placed tee shot to be best of the best at the third hole. Missed the 11th hole green he did.
Today's event is a 14-hole 2BBB Stableford and visitors are invited to take part, but sound advice is to give the Club a call on 65626291 to arrange for a start and/or cart.
