Visitors to Grassy Head Beach can now enjoy safer access and enhanced viewing areas following the completion of a foreshore improvement project by Kempsey Shire Council.

Co-funded by grants from the NSW Government's Coastal Management Program and council's Environmental Levy, the $60,000 project was initiated by community members and Grassy Head Dune Care representatives.
Beach access paths at Grassy Head were significantly damaged by storm events prior to 2014 resulting in the formal closure of the public access point.
Council's coordinator strategic and environmental planning, Steve Schwartz, said the beach access improvement project was identified as part of the Kempsey Coastal Zone Management Plan 2016.
"The restoration works included the construction of a board and chain walkway and viewing platform at the main visitor beach access and an upgrade to the front dune section of the beach access track used by Grassy Head Holiday Park patrons," Mr Schwartz said.
"The timber steps, seating, platform and fencing are all designed and positioned within the dunes to be readily reconstructed if damaged by large ocean events."
Council's Environmental Levy enables the funding of significant environmental restoration projects, including beach access improvements.
The Grassy Head project aligns with the healthy, wealthy and connected values of council's Community Strategic Plan.
