Fire hazards will be reduced in state forest areas near Herons Creek and Lansdowne this week. This follows a successful program of burns undertaken since Easter, including hazard reduction burning in state forests near Old Bar, Coopernook, Eungai and Collombatti.
"The cool dry weather helps us to protect the community and our forests with carefully planned fire," Protection Forester Mick Wilson said.
This year Forestry has a program of 20,000 hectares of strategic hazard reduction within the state forests of the Mid North Coast and use sophisticated techniques to pick the right times to burn.
"The burns will be mild and patchy and will continue for a few weeks. Burning in the cooler months ensures that environmental impacts are low, forest health is improved and the community is protected ahead of the next fire season," Mr Wilson said.
Hazard reduction burns will be carefully monitored to ensure they stay within cleared containment lines, and people should stay away from any burning or recently burnt areas for their own safety. Motorists should also take care when driving in smoky conditions.
The hazard reduction burns will all be visible on the Fires Near Me app as planned events.
Residents are reminded that smoke will be visible from the Pacific Highway during hazard reduction burning.
