Concerned local and experienced boater, Steve Blundell, addressed the councillors at the meeting yesterday and said action needs to be taken to ensure boat access to the ocean is safe at Back Creek.

"Back Creek is in your duty of care. We want Back Creek to be preserved and it will be with a break wall. We need to move forward now before it's too late," he said.

Councillors resolved at the December 2018 council meeting to hold a workshop on the matter with relevant stakeholders in early 2019.

The workshop was held on March 12 and provided an opportunity for information transfer between government agencies and the community. It became apparent at the workshop that provisions for boating access at South West Rocks require improvement.

"I welcome any move forward, but it needs to be done now," Mr Blundell said.

To pursue all options available in improving boating access, council will write to the Minister for Transport and Roads requesting he consider coordinating and allocating funding to an investigation of boating access options to the ocean in the South West Rocks area.

Council will also continue with the proposed work at the boat ramp at Back Creek.

Councillor Anthony Patterson moved the recommendation at the meeting and said this will better inform council and the community on the best way forward.

"We need an overview of the needs for South West Rocks and this will move it in the right direction," he said.
