The 15 students are currently involved in a 10-week cadetship program with the Kempsey Rural Fire Service (RFS).

Lower North Coast RFS Operational Officer Christian Yanni said the program gives students the chance to learn about the RFS from a volunteer perspective.

"The aim of the program is to engage younger members into the RFS as volunteers and to teach them the structure of the RFS and how to use the equipment," he said.

"This week for the students is emergency services week so we invited the local police, SES, Fire and Rescue and ambulance crews to come up to the school for the students to see what all of our emergency services do."

The students were able to have a peek inside the emergency service vehicles and learn about the many different jobs of emergency personnel.

"They're incredibly engaged in the program and having all of the services here today has allowed them to get a better understanding of what we do," Mr Yanni said.

The students have been engaging in practical experiences while on their cadetship including learning basic firefighting techniques, use of hoses and pumps and first aid exercises.

"It's been a really great program for the students and will hopefully open up some doors for them to volunteer or as a career."
