The Snappers are the Upper Mid North Coast Rugby Union defending champions, and they showed everyone why when they scored the first try. Not to be outdone by the visitors, the Cannonballs fired back later in the first half taking the score to 12-5 at half time.
"It was a close game right until the end, they scored first, but we managed to get some points before the end of the first half and keep our chances alive," Kempsey Cannonballs coach Carl Thurgood said.
"We have had some decent rainfalls recently, and the wet conditions made it a tough field of play, all the boys still played very well though, our forwards were very strong."
Unfortunately, the local team couldn't get the points, and the Snappers steadily gained the lead, finishing the game on 30, with the Cannonballs trailing behind on 12.
Currently sitting in fifth place, the Kemsey Cannonballs will need to be in the top four to have a hope of playing finals football, and with only a few rounds left, time is running out.
"The boys are still keen to put in the time, the team above us is only one win ahead, so if we get a few good results in the last couple of rounds, we can still make the finals. We are not giving up," Thurgood said.
They couldn't celebrate a win over the weekend, but the Kempsey team was able to celebrate another special event.
"We had a ladies day on Saturday, celebrating and thanking all the ladies in Rugby who do so much for the game," Thurgood said.
This weekend, the Kempsey Cannonballs will take on the Port Macquarie Pirates in the hopes of making it to the finals, coach Thurgood believes that his team can win, but that it will be a close game.
"We had a very close game with them a few weeks ago, and this weekend I believe it will be very close again," he said.
