NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are underway this week across the country, including the Kempsey Shire. It's a special time when the community comes together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This traditional annual event takes a lot of organising with contributions from various working groups and volunteers to make it happen. I would like to thank the Macleay Valley NAIDOC Committee, and everyone involved in making this week's program of special activities happen in the Valley - Dunghutti Country.

The United Nations has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages to raise awareness of the contribution of languages to cultural diversity. People who speak indigenous languages in Australia are pivotal to our country's history and culture. Which leads me to this year's NAIDOC Week theme - Voice. Treaty. Truth: Let's work together for a Shared future. I think everyone can find strength in those words - let us all move forward together for a better future.
Kundabung council catch up
The Shire of Kempsey is home to several smaller townships and localities with strong agricultural and regional attributes - Kundabung is one of those. Located south of Kempsey, Kundabung is a very close and friendly community with a connected and progressive neighbourhood.
Some of my fellow councillors and I had the pleasure of meeting with Kundabung residents on Thursday, 27 June to discuss their community aspirations and the key issues for the future.
I would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who came along to the meeting and took the time to share their thoughts with us. It is important for Council to be connected with all its townships and these workshops enable open discussions with residents about what is happening around the area. The Kundabung Country and Farmers market is this Sunday, July 14 at Kundabung Hall.
