This Thursday, August 1, might well be the horses' birthday - but we reckon we could also claim it as the day to start spotting one of our national trees in all of its vivid yellow, cream and white finery.
From Crescent Head across to Kempsey and up north, the wattle trees are pumping out the petals.
The blossoming vista is undoubtedly at its most eye-catching along the Macleay Valley Way at Barraganyatti north of Clybucca.
There's also plenty of splashes of bright yellow skirting the new Pacific Highway in that area, indicating that wattle love life in the fast lane, or maybe just the soil and aspect are becoming.
Wattles have long had special meaning for Australians and in 1988 the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially gazetted as the country's national floral emblem, according to the Wattle Day Association.
