The 32-year-old South West Rocks Country Club member led his side to a State Pennant Bowls grade four finals position at Port City Bowling Club on Sunday.

While the Ospreys were beaten 64-46 by eventual winners Junee in the semi-finals, Thurgood's return to bowls has been rather impressive.

He originally took it up a "few years ago" as a social activity to do of a Wednesday afternoon before golf took precedence and his bowls set was packed away.

"I never took bowls that seriously and then a couple of blokes I play golf with decided they were going to take bowls up so I said I'd get back into it with them just for the challenge," he said.

"(Then) I bought a new set of bowls, thought I'd start all over again and last year I played in the grade five pennant and we made the grand final at Warilla."

Unfortunately South West Rocks were beaten at Warilla, but it enabled them to move up to grade four this year where Thurgood's run continued.

"This year we went up a grade and I was leading for the team and we made it to the semis," he said.

"There are a few blokes that can't believe the run I've had playing pennant bowls and how I've made state finals twice and not only that but made a grand final and a semi."

Thurgood conceded he wasn't sure what the secret to his golden run was although he admitted luck had played a part.

"I've got a good bunch of blokes around me that I play with so they've taught me how to do it," he said.

And which of the two state finals appearances was the most satisfying?

"It's all good experience for me because I can't believe what's happened in the first two years of playing pennant bowls, but they're both as good as each other," Thurgood said.

"(But) this year especially (is pleasing) to be able to back it up from last year."

After picking up his first golf club at the age of 12, golf remains the number one sport of choice although juggling both golf and lawn bowls appears set to continue.

"I'm keen to get back into my golf because I've played golf for 20 years," he said.

"It's hard to juggle both but I'd like to keep doing both if I can; we'll see if we can get the (bowls) trifecta next year."
