This year, for the whole month of September, customers of Officeworks can support the campaign by purchasing colourful hand cutouts at the counter to proudly display on the stores' windows, purchasing any Studymate product, or by donating online at the checkout. 100% of donations will be used to fund literacy programs as well as Literacy Packs filled to the brim with brand-new school supplies for our nation's most marginalised children.
International Literacy Day hopes to raise awareness and make the Indigenous literacy gap a thing of the past and raise your hand to join the movement for change. The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation's (ALNF), Wall of Hands campaign, supports life-changing literacy programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, empowering kids to write their own bright futures.
Globally and in Australia, illiteracy continues to be a challenge faced by too many, creating barriers to independence, employment, health and well-being and ultimately, happiness. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past age 5. Within Australia, students from low-income families are five times more likely than their wealthier classmates to perform poorly at school.
ALNF is passionate about working shoulder-to-shoulder with communities across the nation and believes firmly that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning. ALNF has seen huge successes with their programs, and, with the support of Officeworks, is excited to have the opportunity to reach more children than ever before.
