With a spotlight recently being placed on the suicide rate among younger veterans and the debate over the need for a Royal Commission in to this, it is little wonder that the theme for this years Veterans' Health Week is mental wellness.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) sponsored Veterans' Health Week will be held from October 26 to November 3, 2019.
DVA promotes that Veterans Health Week is an opportunity for former and current serving Australian Defence Force personnel, their families and carers to improve the health and wellbeing of themselves and their friends.
The departments adds that mental wellness is essential for an individual's overall health and wellbeing which, in turn, strongly influences our physical health and social connection with family, friends and community.
During Veterans Health Week DVA will support ex-service organisations (ESOs) and community organisations with established links to the veteran community to deliver a range of events to highlight the importance of improving and maintaining good mental health.
There are three Veterans' Health Week events here on the Mid North Coast over the period that will provide a wealth of information, advice and links to support organisations for veterans and their families.
The main Veterans' Health Week information day for the Mid North Coast will be held at the Kempsey RSL Club, just ahead of Veterans' Health Week on Wednesday, October 23 from 8am.
Those who have attended this event in previous years, held in other venues around the region will attest to the excellent standard of information stands and presenters.
The next option will be at Dorrigo, Dangar Falls Reserve on Thursday, October 24 where you can visit the Veterans' Health Week stand as part of the Bellingen Shire Council's Mental Health month.
This will be a free community barbecue that will run from 11am to 2pm.
You can also visit the Veterans' Health Week event being held at Coffs Harbour Jetty (near the Sea Cadets shed) on Sunday, October 27.
This will also be a family friendly event and a free barbecue will be provided. Developing an awareness of mental health in the community is of benefit to us all.
Do yourself and your community a service by getting along to one of the above-mentioned events during Veterans' Health Week.
