Cricketers from the three grades had dusted off their bats and given their whites a good wash but they will be forced to wait at least another week before they take to the field.
Macleay Valley Cricket Association president Ben Paix was honest when he admitted he was glad to see the rain, as he thought of the farmers, but conceded it's disappointing to miss out on the first round.
"All matches in the competition were cancelled, there was too much consistent rain so we had no other choice," Paix told the Argus.
"Everyone was very excited to get the season under way and play some cricket but we were also thankful to see the rain because we know there's a lot of people doing it tough.
"It feels like the first round of competition has been rained out 15 of the last 20 years."
In the first grade competition, Rovers were scheduled to face off with Stuarts Point/Eungai at Stuarts Point Oval while the defending champions Nulla were up against South West Rocks on their home ground.
Nulla are predicted to be a formidable opponent in first grade this season, as the club was forced to remove its top side from the Premier League competition, as they enter a rebuilding season.
They expect to return to the Mid North Coast competition next season.
Some of their Premier League players have returned to the local competition to play in the first grade competition.
While the senior competition is hopeful it will get under way for round two this Saturday, the junior competitions are preparing to begin their season too.
There are three junior grades, with youngsters to line up in the Under-10s, Under-12s and Under-14s.
Paix claims the junior numbers are solid and there's a lot of youngsters ready to participate in a great summer of cricket.
"There's a lot of juniors who are looking forward to getting out on the field this Saturday and starting off their cricket season," Paix said.
"Everything is shaping up well, the fields have been mowed and are looking good and we are ready to go. It's just up to the weather now."
Paix said there's a number of juniors who have already started their season as they play in representative sides and he expects those players to also take part in the senior competition this year.
"There's quite a few juniors who have already played in representative carnivals and they are itching to get out there and play locally," he said.
"Those talented players will most likely play up into the senior grades too so there's plenty of cricket for them to play."
