For the first time in recent memory, the Kempsey Cup has been called off before the final race was run.
"Unfortunately, with all the smoke and ash in the air, the visibility and air quality are at unsafe levels for the jockeys to continue," race secretary-manager John Graham said.
The day got off to a promising start with plenty of keen horse racing fans out showing off their outfits.
"We will be back bigger, and better next year, we will definitely look to outdo ourselves," John said.
"I'm overwhelmed by the crowd that came today and showed their support for the Kempsey Cup.
"I'm always humbled by how supportive the people in the Macleay are for local events."
The ground will remain open for now, but everyone is advised to take care in the smoke, especially if you have pre-existing respiratory issues.
