A number of people from Bellbrook and Willawarrin were evacuated on Friday and Saturday following the 'super fire' that tore through the area on Friday afternoon.
With the dangerous weather predictions that were forecast for Tuesday, November 12, many residents who self-evacuated from West Kempsey, Sherwood, Dondingalong, Aldavilla and Frederickton added to the growing number of evacuees at the centre.
Kempsey Shire Council general manager Craig Milburn said the centre was full during yesterday's dangerous conditions.
"The atmosphere here yesterday was quite tense, with people not knowing whether their homes had been lost or not. And then there are the residents who know their homes have been lost," he said.
"A lot of people were able to return home today because of the cooler conditions, but many residents from Bellbrook and Willawarrin remain here at the evacuation centre."
While the centre was full yesterday, many residents have returned home today. Mr Milburn said locals still staying at the evacuation centre will hopefully be able to return home soon.
The section of Armidale Rd between Yarravel and Willawarrin was reopened this afternoon.
"We expect it will still be a few days until residents from Bellbrook will be able to return," Mr Milburn said.
"It all depends on the fire."
While these fires have brought devastation across the Macleay, locals have banded together to support the communities who have been directly impacted.
"The community has been amazing," Mr Milburn said.
"All of the donations have really helped staff here and have made it a lot easier. All of the services being provided have worked well together to ensure everyone is looked after.
"The centre offers a safe and secure place for people to stay and so many businesses in the town have come on board to help out with food and supplies.
"People have been here since Saturday making sure everyone who has been evacuated has been looked after."
The RSL Bowling Club evacuation centre has closed, with all evacuees moved to the Kempsey Showground.
The Kempsey Evacuation Centre will stay open as long as it's needed.
