There are simply no words to adequately express my admiration and appreciation for the outstanding community response to the bushfire emergency last week.

We applaud the bravery of our firefighters and volunteers who worked in dangerous conditions upriver and around the valley to help save homes and properties. You have our heartfelt thanks.
The unprecedented bushfire event saw more than 1000 people register at the evacuation centres set up at the showground and RSL Bowling Club in the five days following the onset Friday night.
The support offered by all corners of our community was truly exceptional. We were overwhelmed with the high volume of donations received, but would appreciate any further donations to be monetary assistance to help people rebuild their lives.
Just as important were the small acts of kindness - a hug, a cup of tea, a willing ear - that comforted those worried about what was happening to their homes and livelihoods.
Community volunteers, government agencies, charitable organisations and local businesses have generously provided support with accommodation and meals, shelter and fodder for animals, and helping to keep infrastructure accessible and traffic safe in the affected areas.
Thank you to the council staff who have worked around the clock to support the Emergency Operations Centre, RFS Operations Centre and evacuation centres - it showed our terrific KSC team at its best.
Unfortunately, we're still counting the full cost of the bushfires. The loss of life and property will be long felt by our community as we work on our recovery.
The big heart and resilience of the Macleay Valley community shone last week and I ask everyone to continue to support and care for each other in the days and months ahead.
Thank you to everyone who rallied to the call for help - I have never been more proud to be mayor or a member of this remarkable Kempsey Shire community.
