RFS public liaison officer Barbara Webster said firefighters have been working hard over the past couple of days to bring the fire under control.

"We've just had a few good days run now where we have been able to make the most of the relatively quiet conditions to strengthen containment lines and do a lot of property protection work in a number of locations," she said.

"Crews have been undertaking a lot of tactical back burning as the fire approaches, heavy machinery have also been used to create containment lines."

The Carrai East fire's status was changed from out of control to being controlled yesterday, but there are still active areas of fire.

"The Wittitrin area is a particular focus for crews today as they try to stop the spread of the fire. We encourage residents to not be in the area if they don't need to be," Ms Webster said.

"We are still having pockets of fire come up around Willawarrin in unburnt areas around Willi Willi Rd.

"We are going to continue with this sort of work over the next few days. It's forecasting a little warmer Friday and Saturday but with a north easterly wind and a cooler day on Sunday."

These weather conditions will aid crews to control the blaze.The Armidale Rd is open from Kempsey to Bellbrook, with council staff working on tree clearing.

"Our tree crews have made the roads that are open safe from Kempsey to Bellbrook and they are working between Bellbrook and Lower Creek but there are still active fires in that area," Kempsey Shire Council general manager Craig Milburn said.
