From November 25 to December 10, Kempsey Famlies Inc are joining organisations around the world to raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women.
"Kempsey Families Inc have been involved in the 16 Days of Activism to end Gender Based Violence for 10 years and this year we have partnered with council and local cafes to raise awareness," Executive Officer at Kempsey Families Inc June Wilson said.
"We advocate all year for this cause but during these 16 days is when we can keep the conversation going and raise more awareness."
Kempsey Shire Council have partnered with Kempsey Families Inc and have placed banners along Smith St while a number of cafes in town are using coffee cups to raise awareness.
"When we got involved in this 10 years ago people weren't ready to have the conversations about domestic violence, but now the response is much broader and having businesses and council get on board is really great," June said.
"On average one woman every day in Australia dies because of domestic violence," June said.
"Having a coffee and a conversation about stopping domestic violence can help.
"A number of Government agencies have come on board over the years to plan events during the 16 days of activism and there is more acceptance now to talk about it."
Kempsey Families Inc would like to acknowledge and thank Kempsey Shire Council as well as Chaddies Store, Tumblegum Bakehouse, Depot Cafe, Sirens Cafe & Espresso Bar, That PlaYce Kebab & Vego, South Kempsey Corner Store and Bulk Health Foods for their involvement.
If you or someone you know has been impacted by domestic violence, contact a support counsellor on 1800 737 732 or Kempsey Families Inc on 6563 1588.
