Kempsey and Crescent Head quilting groups have been busily working away knitting, crocheting and sewing items for wild animals displaced by the vicious fires that tore through the Macleay.

Crescent Head resident Wendy was instrumental in organising the local group as part of a greater effort by the Animal Rescue Craft Guild, which is part of the Animal Rescue Collective.
"I put the word out over Facebook, and all these wonderful people answered the call," she said.
"Most of the ladies probably don't have two bobs to rub together, but they all wanted to help by donating their time."
Many of the keen volunteers are part of the Clyde Street Quilters and Crescent Head quilters and have been busy making bat wraps, joey pouches and kangaroo hanging pouches.
Materials have been donated and brought by the quilters, but the majority came from Bains Laundry Service in Port Macquarie.
"This tragedy has been bringing everyone together, there are groups all around the world who are sending over completed pouches," Wendy said.
"I can't speak for everyone else, but I'll keep going until someone tells me to stop.
"I got the family together over Christmas, and we made about 100 pouches, everyone helped out, it was just wonderful."
It's still a long road ahead before the Macleay fully recovers from the fires, and while there have been many pledges of support, Wendy hopes that people won't forget our native wildlife when donating.
"These fires are affecting animals as well, many of them have lost their homes, and will most likely go hungry because there is just nothing left in their habitats," she said
"Organisations like the RSPCA and our local FAWNA are doing their best to help, and I would encourage anyone looking to donate, to not forget our animals and support these groups."
