The Kempsey Show Society has said it's "impossible" for the 2020 Kempsey Show to go ahead later in the year and are instead beginning to plan for the 2021 show.
The 2020 Kempsey Show was scheduled for April 21 and 22 but was cancelled in March due to COVID-19 restrictions.
When the Argus spoke with Kempsey Show Society President, Donna Clarke, in March there was a small possibility the show might go ahead later this year.
"If we're able to, we will move forward and do something for the community in September.," Donna said at the time.
However, the Show Society has made the difficult decision to not hold a 2020 show and instead focus their efforts on next year's event.
"Because of COVID there's just no chance that we can have a show this year," Donna said.
"The Macleay has been through a lot and holding a show later in the year would place too much strain on the community because we do rely on sponsorships from local businesses."
"We decided it would be better to just start planning for the 2021 Kempsey Show."
Donna said although planning for next year's show has started earlier than usual, it will be a challenge to hold the event.
"Usually we would have the income from the previous show to go towards the one we're planning, but without this year's event going ahead it will be difficult. We do really rely on sponsorships and that will be more important next year," she said.
The Show Society is planning to release the show schedules for next year in the coming months.
"That will give people around six months to plan and organise themselves, whether that means making or baking something for the exhibits."
The Show Society is confident they will be able to put on a successful event next year, but Donna said the support of the community will keep regional community shows alive.
"We are hoping for support from the community. Most of the entertainment we had organised for this year will be booked for 2021 and we will put on a good show for the community next year."
The 140th Kempsey Show will be held on April 13 and 14, 2021.
