In the first round the Mustangs knocked off Macksville Sea Eagles 12-6, a team coach Reuben Jones believes will be right up there come the end of the season.
Jones' prediction is evident in the Sea Eagles' performance the next weekend where they smashed Port Macquarie Sharks 32-10.
Mustangs followed up their close win against Macksville by playing a gripping match in wet conditions against Forster-Tuncurry Hawks.
The score ended at 16-16 after five-eighth Timothy Bull pulled off some last minute heroics to crash over the line with second-rower Bailey Thompson kicking the conversion over the black dot.
Jones described his sides performance as "poor" but is confident the youngsters can turn it around as their first away game beckons.
"We played pretty poorly and were lucky to draw but we'll head back to training, get back to what we do best and give ourselves a good chance," he told the Argus after the Hawks match.
The Mustangs will travel to Port Macquarie this Saturday to take on the Sharks who sit bottom of the ladder after a 28-0 loss to the Wauchope Blues in round one and the round two loss to the Sea Eagles.
Jones says despite the Sharks' poor form he's unsure about the make up of their side and knows the Mustangs will have to be at their best to come away with victory.
"I'm not to sure about the Sharks, we haven't been able to have a look at them but going off last season we had one close game with them so we'll have to improve from last week," he said.
Kick off as per the Group 3 website is scheduled for 10:10am at Stuarts Park.
In under 16's, Kempsey Dragons will verse Nambucca Heads away, looking to make it two wins in a row.
In Group 2 junior rugby league, Kempsey Dragons u'16's league tag take on Woolgoolga away from home with the girls sitting in first place after two comfortable victories. Smithtown's league tag side will verse Bowraville at home.
Kick off for Smithtown is 1:40pm.
