Kempsey Shire Council is carrying out the $600,000 improvement project including a new canteen and administration building, amenities and playground as well as work on the showground surface and roads.
The project has been financed through a combination of funding from council, NSW Government Stronger Country Communities and the National Bushfire Recovery Agency.
In late 2018, council hosted a community catch-up event at the Willawarrin Hall to receive feedback from residents as to how they would like to see the area improved.
The community expressed a desire to see upgrades to the facilities and sports fields in the area surrounding the soccer field and showground.
Work so far has included resurfacing the showground and installing a new amenities block which should be operational by the end of September.
An upgrade of the road into the area is continuing and will improve drainage and safety. Once completed, installation of a new playground will get underway.
The playground is due for completion by December and will include swings, a major piece of adventure equipment and two small spring climbers, all to be installed under the existing shade trees.
Council is also in discussions with the Willawarrin Pony Club and Campdraft committee about the design and functionality of a new canteen and administration building.
This building is the next milestone in the upgrades and more information about the designs and timing will be made available in the coming months.
The community can stay up to date on the progress of the Willawarrin Showground Precinct upgrades by going to council's engagement website Your Say Macleay.
