Following the fish kills in the Macleay River earlier this year as a result of ash from the summer bushfires, a recreational stock enhancement program is helping to boost the fish population in the river.

The program is funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Licence Fee has recently been undertaken by DPI staff in conjunction with Bass Kempsey - a local recreational anglers club.
Bass Fry were released into the Macleay River at several different locations. This enhancement of the recreational fishery provides important socioeconomic benefit to regional areas where these sport fish are released.
The Bass being released recently are approximately 90 days post hatch and are approximately 20mm in length.
These Bass Fry are produced at the Port Stephens Fisheries Institute at Taylors Beach where locally obtained broodstock are spawned and larvae reared through to release under controlled genetic conditions.
There will be a further release of Bass Fry later this year as part of the Dollar for Dollar funding program. Funds have been contributed by Bass Kempsey and Kempsey Shire Council.
Bass Kempsey raise money to fund stocking programs and enhance recreational fishing, the club also promotes catch and release fishing.
