WHEN Darrell Cottell read in the Macleay Argus that his good friend of over 50 years, Milton Matthews, had become a great- great grandfather he smiled and said: "He beat me by eight days."

Long time local Darrell became a great, great grandfather on August 13 when his great-granddaughter, Abbie Bennett gave birth to Gabriel Donald Anthony Bennett at Kempsey District Hospital.
Little Gabriel is the latest addition to the growing family consisting of Darrell's two daughters, Ruth and Joanne, five grandchildren, Lori, Emily, Shannon, James and Hope, eight great-grandchildren, Abbie, Paige, Savannah, Celleste, Elizabeth, Flynn, Caleb and Lettie.
The family tree stretches all the way back to 1857 when John Ward arrived on the Macleay and built the property 'Nethergrove' on Nagels Falls Road.

New great- great grandfather Darrell has seen and done a lot during his time in the Macleay; many among the community would remember him as the Dental Prosthetist in West Kempsey for over 40 years, retiring just shy of 83 years old.
Among Darrell's other achievements are a lifetime membership in the Lions International and a Life Governor of the Save Sight Foundation; he is also one of the few that hold both William R.Trezise and Melvin Jones fellowships.
He now lives at Cedar Place enjoying the company of his growing family, and all the activities at the aged cared facility in West Kempsey.
