Cool, calm and collected, yes, the year 2020 Kempsey Veterans Golf Club's Foursomes Championships on Tuesday last went off without any hiccups whatsoever.

Extended by four to the full 18 holes on course, the fact that 37 players arrived for the event added that little bit extra for a prized title that has been considered to be lacking interest for some time now.
Hit for hit and driving from alternate tees with a selected partner sort of halved the day's activity - a word that the dictionary suggests energetic action or movement.
So the extension of four holes was the spark required and there was even a starter whom had "never ever played in such a game of golf before." Ray's wide smile really said so.
Naturally the best off-the-stick score brought about the true championship winners and 'twas Graham Schasser and Graeme Dyet snaring the honour with an 85 gross-wise , albeit by just the lone stroke.
Two other A-graders - Chris Gorman and Steve Bates - may well have been unlucky, but was it the respective left-right combination of the two G's that "clicked" best overall.
The odds in any betting market on the outcome would almost certainly have had both runners (so to speak) very tight odds-wise.
Maybe a little less of lustre, however the fact that two C-grade lesserlights - Peter Mercer and Steve Cameron - played their hearts out to gain glory and be shimmering as the Foursomes Nett Champions of 2020.

Both Peter and Steve are from down south at Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie (ie respectively) and the first-named is none other than the Club's handicapper. But that matters not...believe me!
Of course their 8-under par 64 nett was always going to be hard to better and it certainly was, for Steve Trott and Ray Moodie were a full three strokes plus a half back.
Ray did reckon that the new game to him is "much better than Ambroses." Led the new ball winning list they did with their 67.50.
Then followed Phil Pinney and Paul McNamara 69, with the Gorman-Bates duo also 69 and on 70 nett were Dan Cater and Wayne Hutley and Michael Hinchcliffe and Peter Campling.
Nearest the pin winners at the third hole were Schasser (A), Terry Smith (B) and Barry Pearson (C) and chip-ins were performed by Robert Johnston, Pinney, Gorman and Cater.
Far too young to qualify as a veteran, however mention must be made of Bradley Dyet's offer to partner latecomer Brian Stringer a start and the 21-y-o almost caused a boilover (so to speak).
On the bottom of the results board was listed B. Stringer-B. Dyet 86-72.50 and one wonders what could have been, eh!
Now today's event is a 14-hole Stableford with the front nine dominating and any visitor to our Nature's Wonderland is invited to take part.
Good advice is to give the Club a call on 65626291 and tee-off is near 9.15am.
