Last year marked a very different Anzac Day, with private Light up the Dawn services held in place of the usual commemorative ceremonies.
In 2021, the streets of the Macleay will be lined once again as traditional Dawn Services and Anzac Day marches return.
Kempsey Macleay RSL sub-Branch president Allan Wardrope said the return to almost normal services means a great deal to local veterans.
"Our veterans are very happy about the services returning. We couldn't march last year and although we understand why, it was still difficult to not be able to hold a service," he said.
"Not all members of the sub-Branch come into the hall all the time, but they have been coming in recently to find out what is planned for the day."
Allan said the return of services means the community can reflect together on the nation's courage and the brave service of the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
"We are also trying to include the schools as much as possible in the services this year because children should learn and understand the sacrifice many men and women have given to allow us to be free today.
"We can't allow this day to be pushed aside because it's so important.
"We're expecting a high number of people at this year's services because they were cancelled last year," Mr Wardrope said.
Anzac Day services overseas, however, will not go ahead as normal in 2021. The decision was made on the health advice of Australian authorities due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.
This includes the Australian and New Zealand-led Anzac Day services in Turkey and the Australian services in France. The day will still be recognised in these countries however, with locally-based officials holding private commemorations.
A COVID-safe national service will be held at the Australian War Memorial and broadcast nationally, with all Australians encouraged to tune in and watch on the day.
