"Some days are diamonds, some days are stones" - oh, yes they are and it is a belief that John Daley, the A-grade winner of last Tuesday's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club stableford event, will now remember for many a day.

For the former local businessman accountant for many a year "cashed in" (so to speak) with a round that proved he really can handle matters when it comes to figures. He had had a shocker seven days prior.
When one does finish a 14-hole competitive stableford round with 38 points for just 14 holes it is certainly worth big and not smalltalk for a veteran member off a 15 handicap.
Several 4-pointers, quite a few threes and twos and just the lone 1-pointer were there on his card and that birdie for a four on the par-5 ninth hole that was something right out of the ordinary (so to speak),
Up just less than 50 metres south-west of the green with the flagstick still embedded John's chip that went almost up to the heavens landed 30cm from the hole and the ball perfectly jumped in beside the pin. It was really something well worth being part of, I can vouch for that.
A-grade runner-up, Allan Heather, on the board with 32 points to his name, must have been tearing his hair out whe n he checked in only to find he was six points off the pace. But he did take it on the chin, did Allan.
Winners of the two minor grades, Bob Garner (B) and Graeme Irving (C), were more to the point, the former surviving a countback with his 27-point tally, as did the latter's 29 point entry.
In the ball competition Phil Pinney did somewhat suffer this time in the countback and both Graham Hall and Graham Schasser gained reward for their 28 points. Just the one back came Mark Townsend, Steve Bates, Hilary Dew and Mal Blanch.
A septet on 26 points were Graeme Dyet, Peter Mercer, Trevor Bailey, Ron Ingall, Bruce Morris and Ray Emery.
Dew's shot that brought an eagle his way at the 18th hole was, by just a whisker, the shot of the day to the final shot of Daley as described earlier on.
Nearest the pin at the Alan Macdonald Memorial $100 Hole-in-One at the third were Wayne Simmons (A), Hilton Barnett (B) and Barry Pearson (C). At the 11th hole Heather, Hilton Barnett and Pinney were the respective winners.
Chip-ins were performed by Paul Dykes, Terry Hyland, Ray Moodie, Dew, Irving and Daley.
Tuesday's event is a 14-hole 2BBB Stableford and Individual with the front nine dominating this occasion. Tee-off is 9am.
