They had to couple that loss with temporarily closing Karly's cafe, now named Jones Espresso Cafe, the business run by Barry and Krystal Jones.
But now they're back!
The cafe re-opened on Monday and they're delighted to return to business.
"It's good to be back open, it's been a while," Mr Jones told the Argus.
"Most of our regulars have returned."
Not only have they stepped foot into the cafe again but also found themselves a new place to call home, residing in Kempsey.
"It's been pretty hectic, we had to find new beds and furniture, get the kids organised with school," Mr Jones said.
"But we've had plenty of help.
"Kempsey Christian Outreach iCare have provided us with a truck, Angie from Services and NSW and the recovery hub have been great as well along with Vinnies, Salvos and the Red Cross."
"The support has been amazing, we'd be struggling without them," Mrs Jones added.
Jones Espresso Cafe can be found in Pead's Arcade.
